Who Won, Who Lost and Why
Youth/Minor Hockey
coaches, parents and players; I have attended over
35 playoff games this past season.
From my viewers
perch high above the ice surface I can clearly see
why some
teams won and others lost the playoff series.
If coaches had a
spotter in the stands it might have made a
difference
as to the outcome of some games or even the
series.
The teams that
were victorious had excellent goaltending.
Coaches had a
game plan based on their skills and the opposition’s
weakness.
They were well
disciplined and took very few penalties.
They gave a 100%
effort on every shift and used all their players.
The coach would
insert his best faceoff man if it was late in the
period
or game and had to win the key faceoff in their end
zone in order to control the puck and exit their end
zone.
He/she also had
the right players on at the right time late in a
close game.
The team that
lost the series it was not necessarily because of
less talent.
It was more
because of undisciplined penalties at the wrong time
in the game.
It was also
because of undisciplined positional play where 2
defencemen would go into
the corner and leave
a player wide open in front of the net and he ended
up scoring.
It was Coaches
not adjusting their game plan when it was not
working and countering
with a more defensive
approach or getting the puck in deep against a
superior team.
If I have one
suggestion for coaches who were on the losing side
of this year’s playoffs,it’s
to have a spotter in the stands who you have respect
for and can give you the info
you need to make
adjustments during the game. Sometimes coaches on
the bench
cannot see what is happening because they are at
ice level. The elevated spotter in the
stands can see how
the oppositions forechecking and clearing plays are
unfolding.
He might even
have some suggestions as to how to score or prevent
goals.
